Dogs Eyesight--Helping Your Pet Improve Their Vision
A dog's eyesight is different from ours, as you probably know. In some ways their sight is superior to ours--for example, when seeing in the dark. In other ways, they see less than we do, such as in distinguishing certain colors. However, their sight is very important. Dogs are like detectives, using their sight to solve questions of identity: creature or object, prey or predator.
One of our beloved dogs, Sierra, a black toy poodle, was a true sleuth! She was special in the way that she reacted to statues, from raggedy scarecrows to stone bunnies. Whenever she passed a statue, she recognized the lifelikeness and would try to get closer to check it out.
At first, she would bark, then crouch, then begin to sneak up slowly, sometimes circling around the statue, closer and closer, inspecting carefully, until she was satisfied that there was no danger--no threat to her or her people. As a proper canine detective, she used her amazing sight to carry out her investigations.
A dog's eyesight is a vital sense for them; it enhances their overall quality of life. Exercising their visual abilities not only keeps them physically fit but also mentally stimulated. Engaging in activities that stimulate their sight, such as chasing a ball or exploring new environments helps maintain their cognitive function and prevents boredom.
Additionally, a well-exercised sense of sight aids in bonding with their human companions and fosters a deeper connection. Overall, providing tools to dogs to help them exercise their sense of sight is essential for their well-being and happiness.
A Dog’s eyesight needs to be exercised, so engage them in activities that stimulate their visual senses. Regular walks in different environments expose them to new sights and smells, keeping their senses sharp. Play interactive games like fetch or hide-and-seek, using colorful toys or objects to capture their attention. Take your dog to a dog park or open field, letting them explore their surroundings. Overall, providing a variety of visual stimuli through outdoor adventures and interactive play is key to helping your dog exercise their sense of sight and stay mentally and physically active.
Interactive dog toys are an effective way to attract their visual curiosity. Puzzle toys with moving parts are especially engaging.
For example, the Nina Ottosson Tornado has four layers of alternating colors of blue and yellow. This puzzle dog toy is designed to elicit an immediate response from its play partners. The rotation of the bright yellow blades catches the eye of every dog detective and draws them in to investigate the scene. Of course, if they’re extra alert, they might notice that you are the mysterious power behind the rotation, but that just emboldens them to jump in.
Another problem-solving dog toy, the Nina Ottosson Twister, is built with various shapes. This advanced, level 3 puzzle challenges the canine snoop to check out all the different parts—circles, loops, 4-sided panels--and to determine the combination that unlocks the vault where treats are hidden.
